How to Choose the Best Cap

Baseball caps refer to soft snug-fitting hats usually containing logos of sports teams. They are made using flexible materials like wool, cotton, polyester, or acrylic which can keep the wearers comfortable as they brave the sunlight to watch their favorite teams at play. The brim of the baseball caps protrudes from the front to keep the wearer buffered from the sun glare.

They are usually made by stitching together a few panels of fabric that fits neatly around the crown of the wearer’s head. The back of the cap might have a Velcro, plastic, or elastic adjuster which can cater to the wearer’s comfort needs. Initially, these caps were sported by baseball players as a part of their uniforms.

Nowadays, baseball caps have evolved into a popular choice of accessory which can keep your eyes and head out of the sun whether you are wearing it as a part of your athletic ensemble or casual wear. So, whether you’re wearing it as part of a casual ensemble or an athletic uniform. Here are fourteen various styles of baseball caps you can find.

Fitted cap: Just as the name suggests, these caps don’t have any back adjustment, so you’re stuck with the fit of the particular size. They do, however, offer a snug fit, just make sure you’re comfortable. For a better fit, look for Flexible Fitted caps, which are basically like the ones we listed above, just with an added elastic band that stretches to the width of your head.
Snapback cap: Snapbacks were popular in the early 90s just as my Dodgers cap, and they were intensively worn by rappers and teens of the day. Today, they’re making a comeback. This type of cap gets its name from the adjustable straps at the back of the cap. One strap has jutting points that fit into holes of the other strap. The more holes there are, the more choice for a tighter or looser fit. The caps come in different sizes, and some might be marketed as men’s caps, women’s caps or kids’ caps.
Strapback cap: Strapbacks are baseball caps that have a strap that tightens or loosens along a strap buckle. A simple pull will get you the fit you want. They’re good when doing sports, as they won’t come off when jostling around, or when faced with a headwind. Similar to Strapbacks are Hook and Loop caps which tighten by the way of a Velcro loop or hook at the back, though worn hats might loosen up after longer use.
Flexible fit cap (Stretch-to-fit): A flexible-fit cap has an elastic band at the back of the crown of the hat that allows it to stretch to fit the wearer’s head.
Five-panel cap: The crown of a baseball cap is usually composed of several panels of fabric sewn together. A five-panel cap, sometimes referred to as a camp cap, is made up of five panels of fabric sewn together. Four of the panels are equally sized and form the back of the crown, while the fifth panel is larger and located at the front of the cap. This allows manufacturers to embroider the front of the hat with different designs without the interruption of a seam.
Six-panel cap: A six-panel cap has a crown that features six triangular pieces of fabric sewn together and connected at the top of the crown. Most often, the panels of the hat are all the same color.
Seven-panel cap: Seven-panel hats are a cross between the five and six-panel caps. The triangular pieces of fabric are arranged and joined similarly to a six-panel hat, with the front covered by the seventh panel, also similar to the five-panel. This front panel will allow manufacturers to embroider an uninterrupted design on the front of the hat.
Structured cap: A structured cap is made out of a structured material called buckram to maintain its shape once it’s removed from the wearer’s head.
Unstructured cap: An unstructured cap uses a softer, limper fabric that doesn’t maintain its shape once it’s removed from the wearer’s head.
Flat brim cap: Flat-brimmed caps come with a flat bill (the front visor of the hat) rather than a curved one.
Curved brim: With a curved brim cap, the edges of the bill of the hat curve downward to keep the sun out of the wearer’s peripheral vision.
Sandwich-bill cap: A sandwich-bill cap has a thicker brim that features three sandwiched panels of fabric to make up the brim, usually with the middle panel contrasting the color of the outside panels.
Mesh Back (aka Trucker’s hat): Mesh back baseball hats are not just for truckers anymore. Mesh back baseball caps in flex fit and adjustable styles for adult and youth teams. These baseball cap styles have mesh on the two back panels for added breath-ability.
Dad hat: Dad hats are worn not just by dads of all sorts, but their comfortable fit makes them ideal for any casual outing. They are more curved up front and don’t have a reinforced lining like strapbacks and snapbacks. Possibly the most laid-back cap out there.

Differences in Shape and Design

All baseball caps consist of two major parts – the crown or the part that covers the head, and the brim or visor that protrudes forward from the crown, shading your eyes. The crown can consist of 5, 6, or 7 panels stitched together. Eyelets along the top of the panel provide cooling. Buttons are often seen at the top, where the panels intersect.

Crowns can have an additional inner lining, differentiating caps into structured or unstructured. They can also be of different heights, meaning there are low-profile, mid-profile and high-profile baseball caps. The brim can be curved or flat. Baseball players would wear a 5- panel structured mid-profile snapcap with a curved brim. Go for the cap with the best fit, especially if you’ll be wearing it for longer periods.

Materials

Cotton is the preferred material in quality caps, especially replicas of official team gear. Cotton is breathable and easy on the skin, so provides for a comfy fit. Inner linings and headbands are also mostly cotton. Hardened cotton, known as buckram, form the brim. Older baseball caps were made entirely of wool, and wool is still used today, especially in the crown. Wool blends are seen in more expensive caps. Polyester and nylon feature in cheaper, loose-fitting caps like trucker and dad hats. Leather is seen in designer caps. Velcro is used in straps, and metal in quality buckles.
